DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
HEADQUARTERS 173D AIRBORNE BRIGADE (SEPARATE)
APO San Francisco 96250

27 March 1968

GENERAL ORDERS
NUMBER 753

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL FOR HEROISM

1. TC 320. The following AWARD is announced posthumously.

BUYS, KENNETH A. RA19853088 SERGEANT E5 UNITED STATES ARMY,
Company D (Provisional) 1st Battalion (Airborne) 503d Infantry
Awarded:Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device
 Date Action:3 March 1968
 Theater:Republic of Vietnam
Reason:For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Sergeant Buys distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 3 March 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. On this day, the 1st platoon was the lead platoon for Company D and Sergeant Buys' squad was the lead squad. Sergeant Buys was the lead man when he discovered three enemy bunkers well concealed a few meters to his front and flanks. Knowing his entire element was in the line of fire of the bunkers, he knew the only action to take was to surprise the enemy and give his men the few precious seconds needed to seek cover. With this in mind, he initiated contact with a savage one man attack, catching the enemy totally off guard and allowing his men to get out of the line of fire. With no cover for him to hide behind, he held his ground putting out a devastating volume of aggressive fire until an enemy machinegun burst mortally wounded him. Sergeant Buys' outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery were in keeping with the highest military traditions and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Authority:By direction of the President under the provisions of Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, and USARV Message 16695, AVA-S, 1 July 1966.

From the Wall USA
Fellow Soldier, of the 173, Airborne
I met Kenny, during his second, tour in Nam, as we were in the same Company. I spoke to Kenny days before he got killed and wondered, why anyone would volunteer to come back to what we knew as hell. I remember well the day he got killed. He took some heavy fire to his stomach and chest area. He died quickly. I too, got wounded the same day, March 3/1968, and lived to tell a story or two. Kenny was a good looking kid and was looked up to by many of us.

God bless you Ken, you paid the ultimate sacrafice for us all.  Our memories of you will live on in our hearts.

From Judy Zeoli - Bainto on April 7th, 2014
I think of Kenny often and carry his shirtless soldier photo in my cell phone so I can show anyone anytime they speak to me of the Vietnam War.. Whenever I see a Vietnam Wall Memorial, I find and touch his name. What a true hero he was.

Gilda had such a wonderful love of life and such an incredible voice. We sang together at Rancho for 4 years. We also share the lead in the musical Annie Get Your Gun. Gilda got the pretty songs and the guy! We both went on to Cal State Long Beach and there she met a really fun drummer and married him. I was honored to sing at their wedding. I will always remember her and miss her.

Born May 4, 1947, Greg Joyce of Hesperia left for his next adventure on the wings of a butterfly guided by his father, Carl, who predeceased Greg in 1998 and his mother, Doris in 2009. Greg passed on June 24, 2011. Surrounded by his loving wife, Jacqueline, his three sons, Rick, wife Michele, Randy, wife Tammy, David Bullard, Greg's other "mom", Hazel Joyce and his best dog buddies, Zach and Abby. Born in Manhattan Beach, Greg graduated from high school and quickly moved into the field of international transportation with Columbia Export Packers in Torrance, CA. In that position and a subsequent one with Dean Forwarding, Greg was able to travel to many countries of the world absorbing the culture and increasing his knowledge of international business. After building his own crating business with his wife, Greg relocated to the San Bernardino mountains and subsequently to Hesperia in 2000. He understood the best aspects of customer service in his position at the Pro Desk at Home Depot. He was given several awards over the years recognizing his efforts in providing high quality service to professional contractors. Also surviving Greg are his sister Sharon Hunter-Moore, husband Bill, his nephews David, wife Kirsten, Michael, great nephews, Nathan and Ryan and his five grandchildren, CJ, Wynter, Clare, Maxx and Zoe all of whom loved and learned from their "Opa". He thrilled them every year with his magical Christmas scenes both inside and outside each home he had. At his request, there will be no services. At a later date, his family and friends will celebrate his life. Greg will be sorely missed not only by his family but by so many who knew him as a "great guy who knew how to do everything". I miss and love you "Honey Bunny".

July 29th, 1947 - July 27th, 1979

From Bo Jones:

John and I were best friends growing up.  In September of '65 John went into the Navy.  In 1969 we enrolled in Golden West College for one year. John moved to Kauai in 1970 after Larry Brown told him how fantastic the Island was.  I took a 2 week vacation in 1971 and flew to Kauai for a visit and also stayed.  John started his own sport diving business and worked on both Maui and Kauai.  Larry and I attended the State paramedic program at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu and returned to Kauai driving the ambulance out of Wilcox Hospital.  In July of 1979 we received a call to respond to a diver with the Bends (Decompression Sickness). It was John and his condition was critical. Larry and I initiated emergency procedures and returned to Wilcox Hospital.  The closest decompression chamber was at Pearl Harbor on Oahu.  We immediately got John on a flight to Honolulu along with John's brothers Don and Bill with myself as medical attendant .  John was transported to Pearl Harbor and immedietly placed in the decompression chamber (A 10-12 hour procedure to allow nitrogen bubbles to dissolve in the blood stream). Don, Bill and I got a hotel room to await the procedure.  About 2 hours later I had an intense and overwhelming belief that I needed to return to the chamber.  I left Don and Bill in the room and took a cab back to Pearl. I was looking at John through the viewing port when he turned his eyes to me. I knew he was saying goodbye. I was sitting in a chair with tears streaming down my cheeks when about 2 hours later the Navy doctor approached me and said John had a nitrogen bubble lodged in his brain stem and no longer had any brain activity.  I was still on duty and returned to Kauai on an early flight.  Larry picked me up at the airport and we returned to Wilcox.  John was removed from life support 3 days later with his family and several friends by his side.
Anyway, as I sit here with tears on my cheeks all my memories of those years John and I spent together were among the happiest of my life. He was an exceptional human being and an exceptional and remarkable friend.

Thank you Joy and Gary.
I miss him everyday. I just logged onto this site and saw this for the first time.
Tom was a "bigger than life" guy who did it all his way. The few friends he had, were his friends for life.  He loved me, from the first time we met up at Bob's on Garden Grove Blvd, he loved his kids and his grandkids and his few lifelong friends. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. When he found out that he had Stage four cancer, he orchestrated his own end. That was the way he lived and the way he died.

Profile picture

Obituary

Philip Ralls was a board certified Doctor of Diagnostic Radiology specializing in Radiology, Diagnostic Radiology and Diagnostic Ultrasound.  He graduated from UCLA Medical School and was affiliated with USC County Norris Cancer Center.

Dr. Ralls passed away suddenly at his home on Sunday, September 23.
Dr. Ralls’ contributions to Los Angeles Radiological Society spanned three decades. Beginning in 1981 as a Workshop Instructor for the 6th Annual Spring Diagnostic Ultrasound Conference, Dr. Ralls was a constant contributor to the Ultrasound Conference and the LARS Ultrasound Section throughout the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s.
Dr. Ralls provided countless lectures and case reviews, served as President of the Ultrasound Section from 1984-86, offered sage advice to conference chairs, and most recently, entertained participants of the 37th Annual Conference on May 5, with his unique wit and wisdom as he moderated a panel of his expert colleagues in a discussion of today’s ultrasound imaging dilemmas.
Now, as we look to the future, as we plan dinner lectures and the 2013 Ultrasound Conference, it is difficult to imagine LARS without Phil Ralls.
Dr. Ralls dedication to ultrasound is only eclipsed by his dedication to his family and his pride in their accomplishments. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Renee, son Colin and daughter Whitney.

Suzie lived across the street from me. She was amazing. Born with Cerebral Palsy her parents Ivy and George were told to institutionalize her. She endured severe seizures yet persevered with the most delightful personality and quick witted sense of humor. We were watching the world series one time. As soon as a player would land on first or second, third, whatever, she would announce his new batting average. I could't figure out how she could do it, long before the announcer could say it and she was always right. She would just laugh. Finally, I got it. "You've worked out all the potential batting averages in your head ahead of time?"  She smiled and nodded. I remember a supportive, loving family, two younger sisters and a brother.
